12 Days of Ornaments Extravaganza - Day 9

This is Susan to show you yet another handmade ornament.  For my ornament today, I chose to do a tag, using metal and Pink Paislee's Father Christmas paper line. Love those vintage images.
So let's get started!

These are the supplies you will need:
a manilla shipping tag, approx. 3 1/4" x 6 1/4" (from an office supply store or make your own cutting a rectangle of cardstock and snipping off the top corners and punching a hole)
Pink Paislee Father Christmas Trading Cards paper
Girls Paperie Tinsel and Twig stamp set (or any Christmas sentiment stamp)
Ten Seconds Studio art metal, 3 1/4" x 6 1/4" (I used Poison Ivy)
Cuttlebug or Big Shot machine
Cuttlebug or Sizzix embossing folder (I used the Sizzix Tim Holtz music folder - did you know that The Little Blue House is an order station for Sizzix and we can get any Sizzix product for you!)
sanding block
decorative wheel for metal
ivory cardstock - one 4" scalloped oval and a 1" x 3 1/2" strip
"Green with Envy" and black Quick Quotes chalk inks
3 1/2" ivory lace
3 1/2" burgundy ruffled Maya Road velvet ribbon
10" narrow red velvet ribbon
Stickles - Xmas Red and Diamond
silver Krylon pen
Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive
Helmar Scrap Dots
Helmar pop dots
(All supplies listed are available at the LBH except the lace and tag.)

First choose your Father Christmas image from the Trading Cards sheet and cut into a 3 1/2" oval - I used a Creative Memories oval cutting system, but you could use a punch or a template.  Edge with silver Krylon pen and layer on the cardstock scalloped oval.  Using your finger (best tool ever!) lightly pat on Diamond Stickles over the entire image and add dots of red Stickles to each scallop.  Set aside to dry.  (I forgot to take pics of these steps, but you will see this later in the tutorial.)

Stamp a Christmas sentiment on the cardstock strip with black ink, cut ends into a v-shape and edge with red Stickles.  Let dry.

Cover one side of the tag with the reverse patterned side of the Father Christmas paper.  Ink the edges with green ink. Remember to punch the hole before covering both sides!

Place the art metal, color side up, in the embossing folder.  (The metal will be a tad longer - this is ok as it will be covered with trim later.)  Run through your die-cutting machine.

Sand the metal lightly with the sanding block to reveal the silver metal on the embossed pattern.  (TIP:  Do this on a paper towel and when you finish you can remove the towel and have a clean workspace.) Adhere this to the front of the tag - you can use either Tacky Tape or the Helmar 450 adhesive.  Once the metal is on the tag, trim as necessary and run the decorative wheel along the edges to further secure it and give it a finished look.

Adhere a strip of lace to the bottom of the tag and, above that, a strip of the ruffled velvet ribbon (isn't that gorgeous - I'm in love with that ribbon!).  Trim edges as necessary. Fold the narrow velvet ribbon in half and bring both ends through the tag hole from the back and knot in front.  Add the oval layer to the upper left portion of the tag with pop dots.

And, finally, curl the little sentiment banner with your fingers to give it some dimension and add it below the Santa image with Scrap Dots.  Have you ever used this?  It's a neat, new product from Helmar that comes in a tube.  You can add as much or as little as you want, depending on the height you want your image to pop up!  It dries clear and fairly quickly (though not instantly).

Can you see how high this blob is?

    And here's the finished ornament!

I hope this tutorial will inspire you to make one of your own.  Be sure to comment on this post for a chance to win this tag.  Tell us about your favorite family Christmas tradition.  Mine is my husband reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to our children every Christmas eve, just before bed.  I have kept the book in hopes that when they have children of their own they will continue the tradition.

CONGRATULATIONS to our winner of yesterday's ornament:  LINDA KRATZERT!!  Please claim your ornament at The Little Blue House!  Check back tomorrow for another lovely ornament.

    2. Susan, love the tag. I am so glad you used that red ribbon because it is my favorite. I also think adding the crochet lace makes it even better. Very Pretty!!! My favorite Christmas tradition is when someone in the family reads the story of Jesus' birth from the Bible. No matter how many times I hear it, it sends goosebumps over me thinking that God sacrificed His only Son for my salvation.

    3. Okay...I LOVE this metal! I took one metal class....bought alot of the tools...now I need to actually USE them!

My favorite holiday tradition is watching the girls run outside right before bed to leave carrots for the reindeers....and they CHECK the next day to make sure they are gone! They are 10 and 8...so they probably won't do this much longer!

    8. Susan, this is really cute! My favorite holiday tradition has always been to spend Christmas Day with my kids, have dinner, open presents & enjoy reminiscing old stories of past. I know that as grandkids get older & family expands, this will probaly change, for now will enjoy to fullest.

    10. Susan, such a lovely tag!! You always do vintage right!!
A silly Christmas tradition that my husband started and now everyone on my side of the family does it too: when he makes out the gift tags he puts silly names on them. For example, a game for my nieces might say, From:Gameboy, or a calendar-From:Father Time, perfume-From: A Smelly Fella or From: A Skunk etc.
Now that everyone does it, when we get together to open presents we don't know who the gift is from except "Father Time".
Another favorite tradition that has been discontinued is a Family Talent Contest(because after 5 years we all ran out of talent). Examples of talent---doing a horse laugh, whistling, having the dog do tricks, making underarm noises, water tasting, etc.

    11. Pretty tag, gr8 idea for an ornament! Well, for most of my dd's life, we've spent Xmas eve with extended family. So, after that celebration, we come home, make something special for Santa and she's allowed to pick one gift to open b4 bedtime. Even though she's 18 now, she still enjoys the magic of Santa Claus. And this year will be even MORE special as one of my grandchildren will be here for the first time!

    12. Susan - Love it as I always love anything you design or make!

My favorite Christmas tradition is actually on Christmas Eve. My husband & I meet our daughters at The Taste of Texas restaurant in Houston & have a really nice meal together - just the 4 of us followed by attending an 11:00 Christmas Eve service. When we leave the church, it's Christmas!

    13. I can so do this...I bought the paper, along with several others :) and of course I love the metal as well. Have to work on this one soon.
Favorite tradition is making my grandma's christmas cookies, old school style. All from scratch, rolled out and cut with cookie cutters and then decorating them. Lots of work but they are yummy!

    14. Susan - Love this tag, you always do such wonderful vintage designs.
My favorite tradition is our whole family going to midnight mass together. With everyones busy schedule it is the only time everyone is together at mass.

    15. Susan I love this....my favorite tradition started in Atlanta when the kids were little. It was our first time not to be with family. I read an article that said keep some of your old traditions but also start a few new ones. So we have Christmas jammies from the elves that magically appear while we are at church and the "junk food pinic" on Christmas day. Rather than have a big meal..we have snacks and finger food and all sit on a blanket and watch a Christmas movie together. My kids are 23 1nd 19 and they still love this. And...they have yet to catch the elf who leaves the PJ's.

    16. Oh Susan, I just love this vintage tag (and anything with that gorgeous velvet ribbon). My favorite tradition is going to midnight mass (8:00 nowadays with kids in tow) then coming home to tamales, rice, a big pot of beans and mexican hot chocolate. Then we would put out the milk and cookies for Santa (as children, this was sometimes at 2 in the morning!) and open one special present from mom and dad before going to bed. Then in the morning we would have a blast opening Santa's gifts and having a huge turkey dinner with all of the trimmings!

    19. Susan, never would have thought to use a tag, but it is so unique. Of course I love the look you gave it "So Susan". One of my favorite traditions is a big Christmas Breakfast - - - it is now more of a Brunch that we carry through the day and watching 'Christmas Story' for 24 hours straight. We cook till late on Christmas Eve....cherished family time.
